Good morning,

Three short reads this week, picked for people who build small media businesses.

## 1\. Writing for a small audience

A newsletter with a few thousand readers who open every issue is worth more than a large list that never reads. We look at how three independent writers keep their readers close: a consistent day, a clear promise, and replies they actually answer.

## 2\. Picking a publishing tool

Hosted platforms are quick to start with, but the costs grow with every reader. Self-hosting takes an afternoon to set up and keeps your archive, your list and your domain in your hands.

## 3\. One thing to try

End each issue with a single question for your readers. The replies tell you what to write next. More on how we put issues together is on the [HeyNews site](https://heynews.co/?ref=news-test.heynews.co).

Thanks for reading. Just hit reply if you have thoughts.
